David Blunkett says Labour should consider decriminalizing drugs

LONDON — A Labour grandee has urged Keir Starmer to launch an inquiry into the decriminalization of drugs, in a split with current party policy. Labour peer and former U.K. Home Secretary David Blunkett told an episode of POLITICO’s Westminster Insider podcast that there should be an “open debate” about how victims of drugs are treated. Starmer, a former senior prosecutor, has made repeatedly clear that he is not in favor of changing the law to decriminalize drugs. “I don’t think we should decriminalize drugs,” the Labour leader said last month. “I’ve seen first hand the damage that drug taking has and does to people’s lives.”He added: “We are not in the business of decriminalizing drugs.”When Blunkett was home secretary in the early 2000s, he downgraded cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug. Man seriously injured in Etobicoke stabbing

A man is in hospital with serious injuries following a stabbing in Etobicoke.Police say they were called to a residence in the area of Dixon Road and Highway 401 just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday night. When they arrived they found a man suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a trauma centre in serious condition. Paramedics say a woman was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. California will remake San Quentin prison, emphasizing rehab

(AP) — The infamous state prison on San Francisco Bay that has been home to the largest death row population in the United States will be transformed into a lockup where less-dangerous prisoners will receive education, training and rehabilitation, California officials announced Thursday.The inmates serving death sentences at San Quentin State Prison will be moved elsewhere in the California penitentiary system, Gov. HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu prosecutors on Thursday filed charges against four police officers alleging a cover-up in connection with a high-speed car chase that they say resulted in a crash and a traumatic brain injury to the driver of another car.Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said the charges are the result of an exhaustive investigation and review of the evidence.“These charges demonstrate that it is important to seek justice even when those believed to have committed crimes are the very people we expect to uphold the law,” Alm said in a statement.
